About
Next up in IWFS Capital Branch’s Cellar Series, we stay in Burgundy – this time, for chardonnay. The grape variety is one of the most popular white varieties in the world. It’s known for being expressive of terroir and versatile enough to deliver crisp and refreshing sparkling wines through to big, oaky styles.
Its global ubiquity both showcases its incredible range but also dampens its excitement factor for many wine drinkers. However, no one doubts that, when chardonnay marries itself to the best environment and expert winemakers, it can produce the most noble wines in the world – white or red. The global benchmark region remains Bourgogne – its original home. Over centuries in regions such as the Cote de Beaune, the Chalonnaise and Maconnais, the grape has found itself planted on the best plots of land and handled with a deep legacy of elevage craftmanship. The result has been nuanced, complex and utterly compelling bottles of wine. The most sought-after labels command prices in the tens of thousands of dollars from collectors around the world.
As with the Cellar Series pinot noir session, we will have James Handford, a Master of Wine who specializes in Burgundy, on hand to guide us through six villages that are best known for producing super premium chardonnay. He will provide context to help us appreciate the differences between them and what allows them to deliver such ‘wow’ factor.
It promises to be a special evening! Spaces are strictly limited.
Details of the bottles will follow shortly, A glass of Cremant de Bourgogne will precede the tasting. A delicious platter of charcuterie, cheeses and bread will accompany the wines.
