THE STAFFORD CELLARS
Tucked away in a narrow street in St James’s, The Stafford was built in the 17th Century as a private residence, functions as a hotel since 1912 and is a testament to the elegance and grandeur of the past. Beneath the hotel lie the wine cellars, built by Lord Francis Godolphin and full of old charm. Over the centuries, these cellars have served many purposes-from secret passageways reputedly leading to St James's Palace, to acting as an air-raid shelter during the Second World War. Today, they are home to over 8,000 bottles of rare and prestigious wines, cognacs and whiskies.
The kitchen is now under the umbrella of Michael Caines, an icon of modern British gastronomy who also owns Michelin-starred Lympstone Manor in Devon. Following a champagne reception with some delicious canapés, we will sit down for dinner, all on one oval table, where we will be served a delectable four-course menu of the chef's signature dishes with matching wines brought by St James’s branch members.
