About
For millennia, wine, food and myth have been woven into the soul of Greece - a civilization shaped by philoxenia (the art of welcoming strangers). From the revels of Dionysus to the temptations of Tantalus, gods and mortals alike have been captivated by the pleasures of the table.
Today, Greece stands at the forefront of a vinous renaissance. Gone are the days when pine-resin flavoured retsina alone defined its reputation. A new generation of visionary winemakers have risen to craft expressive, world-class wines from ancient native grape varieties. Wines produced from grapes such as Assyrtiko, Moschofilero, Agiorgitiko and Xinomavro are lyrical, sun-drenched and as compelling as the landscapes that shaped them. Paired with the wholesome and vibrant flavours of Greek-Cypriot cuisine, these wines ignite a harmonious relationship worthy of the fabled love of Aphrodite and Adonis.
The wines - each with its own story - will be drawn from committee member Mikey Clark’s private cellar, curated to float your palate across the Aegean.
On this special evening, we will gather at Aphrodite Taverna – a neighborhood gem just off Westbourne Grove in Bayswater. Expect generous platters of classic mezze, brimming with Mediterranean warmth and flair.
“Aphrodite Taverna brings a slice of the Mediterranean heart to West London - the oven-baked lamb kleftiko and spit-roast chicken are star turns, the portions satisfy like a proper taverna and the warm hospitality makes this little Greek-Cypriot gem feel like home.”
- Liv Kelly, Time Out
Further details will follow soon. Consider this to be your first hint of a delicious, convivial evening of ambrosia and nectar that will have you feeling positively immortal.
